The Price of a Minor Cough

Smoking affects the respiratory system much more severely than it seems at first glance. When a person inhales smoke, a large number of harmful substances enter the body and settle in the lungs. At first, this is almost imperceptible—at most, a slight cough or discomfort appears. Over time, the situation changes. The lungs lose their ability to cleanse themselves, breathing becomes less deep, and shortness of breath appears even during normal activities. A person may begin to tire more quickly and notice that it is harder to climb stairs or walk for a long time. It is especially important to understand that these changes occur gradually. It is not a sudden blow to one’s health, but a slow deterioration that a person grows accustomed to and stops noticing. This is precisely why many people underestimate the harm of smoking. But the body does not forget. Even if the symptoms are mild, internal processes are taking place that can eventually lead to serious problems. And the longer the habit persists, the harder it is to return to a healthy state.
