A Letter from the Future

Imagine you received a letter from yourself from the future. Not twenty years from now. Just five. And it doesn't talk about illnesses. No horror stories. It just lists the days. "Remember that evening when you were all sitting in the kitchen laughing until you cried, and you stepped out onto the balcony in the middle of it? You missed the funniest part. And that conversation with your father? You kept glancing at your watch, wanting to finish quickly and step out. He noticed. And that morning by the lake? Everyone was breathing deeply, and you were looking for a spot where no one would see. And when your child reached for your hand, and you pulled away because you were afraid the smell would linger in their hair?" The letter ends with one sentence: "I would give it all back if I could. But I'm already the one who missed out." Right now, you have something that person from the future no longer has. A choice. You can read this letter now, not five years from now. And you can decide that you will not be the one who writes it.
